The Indianapolis-Marion County Public Library continues to be one of the city's true success stories. Over 2.9 million patron visits were recorded at the library system's 23 locations in the first half of 2009, a 3 percent increase over the same period last year. The library also recorded over 19,000 new registered borrowers, bringing local cardholders up to over 488,000. The Central Library is particularly popular: There were almost half a million visits in the first six months of 2009, a 13 percent increase over last year. And books are the most popular items, accounting for 70 percent of circulation.
