The so-called smoking ban bill sponsored by Rep. Charlie Brown (D-Gary) has been made almost meaningless thanks to the lobbying efforts of the casino industry. Casinos have been completely exempted from the bill, in a move apparently intended to make the retrograde link between gambling and smoking permanent. Now all the state Legislature has to do is mandate the playing of Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin records in all Indiana casinos, all the time. In a related note, nursing homes were also allowed to set aside special areas for the nicotine fixated.
