David Hoppe should know better then to underestimate the collective social conscious of the American people in his article "Soldiers and Autoworkers" (July 8-15). I think people do care about the troops in Iraq and Afghanistan and they do care about auto workers losing their jobs. People are confused and feel powerless to do anything because the dog-eat-dog capitalist system keeps them in their place with substandard wages, crushing personal debt and in a state of mental lethargy with the constant stream of brain dead dribble on cable news networks. They dare not challenge the order of things or they themselves will wind up in the Middle East carrying an M-16 or find themselves in the unemployment line. There is a way out of this madness and it's called socialism.
