"Your “Teaching the Whole Child” article on IPS School 14 and its fabulous principal, Elizabeth Odle, (Cover, Sept. 20-27) was wonderful, and a refreshing open window into what public schools, more often than too many of us probably realize, can and do accomplish. It should be read by everyone in the Indianapolis area who bashes the public schools and whose children attend or have attended schools that do not have: 80 percent of its families below the poverty level; the most homeless kids of any Indiana school; 20 percent of its children qualifying for special education services; eight times the city crime rate within its boundaries; and a seven times higher juvenile arrest rate that the Marion County average, etc. features you pointed out. Huge kudos to Ms. Odle and IPS School 14!
Thanks for your and NUVO’s continued positive contributions to the commonweal in metropolitan Indianapolis
