While I am in agreement with much of your recent column on the decline and apparent near death of The Indianapolis Star (Hammer, "Death of an Institution," July 15-22), I feel that I need to tell you that there is at least one bright light remaining in that publication. I never fail to read Dan Carpenter's column that appears on the editorial page every Wednesday and Sunday. Mr. Carpenter provides at least one very strong antithetical commentary to the otherwise mostly right leaning newspaper. Carpenter's columns are not only liberal in their content but are written with a literary intelligence that is not often seen.
And now you know of at least three people who subscribe and read The Star every day.
P.S. Gary Varvel seems to me to be a complete idiot.
