"I enjoyed your “Toxic City” article very much (Cover, June 27-July 4) and agree something needs to be done both in the city and state to clean things up. I also found interesting the quotes in your article from Mayor Peterson about mass transit. I have spent countless hours on the Internet trying to find information on the “interurban” transit system that used to link Indianapolis and other areas of the city and state up until I think the mid 1940s. Everything that I have found on the Internet, and even walking the downtown canal, I saw near 11th Street where our “interurban” was one of the best as far as miles of track in the states that had interurbans. I think what needs to be done is a feasibility study by the Mayor’s Office or some other city official or office to see how much of the old “interurban” tracks are still around (either paved over or exposed) and that might be still usable and incorporated into the cost of bringing back a mass transit system to Indianapolis and the surrounding area.
