I performed oral sex on a guy and swallowed. A few hours later my throat was extremely sore. Should I go to the doctor?
Sarah: Yep, but you should always go to the doctor if something is acutely, extremely sore. However, the incubation period of most viruses and infections is a lot longer than a few hours or minutes (unless you’ve been cursed by an old woman with a foggy eye and wake up inside that comic you were reading). There are a bunch of possible reasons your throat hurts, but only your doctor will be able to tell you which one it is.
Debby: I would be surprised if you had any STI-related symptoms within hours of exposure. However, I’m glad you are aware that STIs - including chlamydia, gonorrhea, herpes - can be transmitted via oral sex. Your sore throat could be due to a cold, due to strep throat, or to a previous exposure to an STI and it’s smart to ask a healthcare provider if you have a question about your body.
