Pocket Books/World Wrestling Entertainment Books; $26 Shawn Michaels One of the latest literary offerings from a World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) Superstar is Heartbreak & Triumph: The Shawn Michaels Story. According to Shawn Michaels, his autobiography was his attempt to “set the record straight.
“One day, we were joking about some of the books being written by wrestlers,” Michaels recalled during a recent interview. “And it seemed that the majority of wrestlers/authors had been out of the business a few years. That’s when someone suggested that I write a book.
“I thought about it, and decided that I did have a story to tell. I wanted to be honest, and offer a little more insight to what has happened than what you can read on the Internet. There are a lot of stories out there that I had never known, that Aaron [the book’s co-author, Aaron Feigenbaum] told me about.”
Heartbreak & Triumph details the life of Shawn Michael Higgenbottom, and how his childhood fascination with pro wrestling became his livelihood. As Shawn’s pro wrestling career progressed, there were the highs and lows, figuratively and literally. Michaels became a fan favorite, won numerous title belts and developed an addiction to drugs and alcohol.
With the help of his second wife Rebecca, his children and his close friends, Michaels renewed his faith, and his dedication to family and the business of sports entertainment.
Michaels, aka “The Heartbreak Kid” and “The Showstopper,” is very open about his addictions, and his battles to overcome them. It was this honesty about a darker side of his life that won him the admiration of others in the business.
“One thing about the book that some of the other Superstars mentioned was that they had dealt with similar situations,” Michaels said, “and they were relieved to read that they weren’t the only ones going though them.”
A 20-year veteran of the business, Michaels admitted that he can’t last forever.
“I’m beginning to feel the need to slow down, but that doesn’t mean that the door on my wrestling career is closing anytime soon. I feel like I’m where I’m supposed to be. Every day I thank the Lord for this second chance at life. There was a time where I thought I would never get to go out and perform for the fans again.
“So I am very thankful for this opportunity to do what I love so much.”
