The weather is finally signaling that autumn is on its way - what better time to keep the car parked at home and opt for a bike? Indy Bike Hub YMCA at the City Market had its grand opening on Wednesday as several dozen people gathered for the ceremony around 10:30 a.m.
The partnership between the YMCA and Bicycle Garage Indy exists in order get more people commuting on bikes in Indianapolis than ever before. Mayor Greg Ballard was on hand for the ribbon-cutting ceremony, along with YMCA of Greater Indianapolis CEO Eric Ellsworth, and Bicycle Garage president and founder, Randy Clark. Mayor Ballard wasn’t in his cycling gear for the ceremony, but most know by now that he’s a huge proponent of cycling in Indianapolis.
If you haven’t been in to see what’s going on at City Market, now is the time to check it out. The east wing is the site of an impressive bicycle parking and fitness facility, which includes indoor bike parking, locker rooms, showers, a bike shop, and lots of other fitness equipment. The YMCA Hub is promoting bike commuting with the philosophy that it will help save people time and money, it will help keep people fit — and will keep our city cleaner and “greener.”
According to Mayor Ballard, “We are making great strides to make Indianapolis a more bicycle-friendly city.”
The new facility has been open for about a week already, and an open house is in the works for later in the month. The Hub will promote bike safety and will be the home to bicycling advocacy groups, as well as the IMPD cycle patrol.
The hours of operation are Monday-Friday, 5 a.m. to 9 p.m., Saturday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Even if you’re not commuting to work in the city, the Hub is set up to encourage people to ride their bikes to downtown events.
There are several different options as far as membership and usage goes. Classes and options will continue to expand, but now seems like the best to get in on all that the Indy Bike Hub has to offer.
A Hub membership is $39/month or free for YMCA members. Large lockers are $18/month, and small lockers are $6/month. Now through the end of September, all joining fees will be waived.
