Welcome to the 2009 NUVO Dining CityGuide, our annual recommendations for over 100 of the city's best restaurants, brewpubs, coffeehouses, bistros and cafes throughout the metro area, spanning more than 30 types of cuisine and a variety of price points.
As you can imagine, it's not an easy list to compile. Which is why we set a list of criteria to determine who to include. All of the 2009 NUVO Best of Indy Reader's poll winners are here, as are the best of the new establishments our cuisine writers David Hoppe and Jennifer Litz have visited throughout the past year. We've thrown in a few classic and proverbial favorites of our own, as well as a good list of shopping destinations should you decide to be the chef yourself and need to stock up on the freshest ingredients. Additionally, we've made a point to include and highlight the places with the "greenest" options including local, seasonal, sustainable and/or organic offerings.
One thing nearly all of these 100+ great eateries have in common is their role in our community. As independent, locally-owned and operated businesses, they provide both an economic benefit to the neighborhoods where they have set up shop, but they also give us the unique and thoroughly enjoyable ability to feel at home when eating from someone else's kitchen. With the exception of a few Reader's favorites, all the restaurants we are featuring this year are small, independent and local manifestations of your neighbor's imagination. We can think of no better recommendation.
So sit back, get hungry and get adventurous. There are 100+ reasons to celebrate food in this city, what are you waiting for?
