Four stars (PG-13)
Helen Mirren, Michael Sheen, James Cromwell, Helen McCrory
A fascinating, nuanced, beautifully-acted examination of Britain’s royal family, as well as a captivating glimpse at the interactions between Queen Elizabeth (Mirren) and Prime Minister Tony Blair (Sheen) during the traumatic August 1997 week following the death of Princess Diana in a Paris car crash. You need not be interested in the royal family or British politics to enjoy the movie — it stands up quite well as a character study of some very unusual characters. Thoughtful, subdued and rewarding. Stephen Frears (Dirty Pretty Things) directs. 103 minutes.
