Four stars (R)
Forest Whitaker, James McAvoy, Kerry Washington
Whitaker won an Oscar for his powerhouse performance here as one of the world’s most barbaric figures, self-appointed Ugandan President Idi Amin, in a fascinating tale of a Scottish doctor, Nicholas Garrigan (McAvoy), whose life becomes horribly entangled with the dictator. Directed by Kevin Macdonald (Touching the Void) and based on the novel by Giles Foden. 123 minutes. DVD INFO: Two separately packaged DVDs are available: One preserves the film in the anamorphic widescreen format, while the other hacks off nearly a third of the picture for the fullscreen (aka pan & scan) version. Shop carefully. Both versions include audio commentary by the director, deleted scenes, a documentary and featurettes.
