Into the Wild

Three and a half stars (R)

After graduating from college, Chris McCandless (well played by Emile Hirsch) chucks it all and disappears, living mostly off the grid as he strives to reach his goal of spending a season alone in the Alaskan wild. Sean Penn’s take on Jon Krakauer’s based-on-fact book is lyrical without getting gloppy. Despite a few ponderous moments (I’m talking about your well-intentioned songs, Eddie Vedder), the story rarely drags. 147 minutes. DVD INFO: Includes two short documentaries, one focused on the characters, the other on the filmmaking experience.
