For the past 20 years, White River State Park and Gleaners Food Bank have teamed up to offer free admission to all park attractions on MLK Day. It was great to see so many families out on a chilly but sunny day, to take advantage of this event.
For the price of a can of corn, or any non-perishable food donation, guests could enjoy free entrance into any White River State Park museum and attraction. This included the Indianapolis Zoo, the Eiteljorg Museum, the National Institute for Fitness and Sport, the NCAA Hall of Champions, the IMAX Theater and the Indiana State Museum.
There were many free activities along the way including appearances by members of the Indianapolis Indians and their mascot Rowdie as well as a basketball court for kids of all ages at the NCAA Hall of Champions, booths for kids to make their own art at the Eiteljorg and the Indiana State Museum.
There were also film clips on MLK at the Indiana State Museum plus a great photo exhibit at the Eiteljorg, on loan from the Smithsonian called "For the Love of his People" by photographer Horace Poolaw. Of course there is always a lot to see at the beautiful Indianapolis Zoo, including the indoor exhibits, Oceans, Dolphin Dome, Deserts Dome, the Simon Skjodt Orangutan Center and the Hilbert Conservatory.
