When House Democrats in Washington decided to exercise their right to civil disobedience Rep. André Carson (D-Indiana) was right in the mix.
The protest was staged in an effort to move gun control legislation forward, demanding House Speaker Paul Ryan call two pieces of legislation forward for a vote before recessing for the Independence Day holiday break.
“Congress must not leave Washington, D.C. without voting on commonsense gun violence prevention legislation to save lives. It’s simple: No Bill, No Break,” said Rep. Carson during Wednesday's protest. “Mass shootings have become unacceptably commonplace in our country. Moreover, our communities are struggling to create safe environments and reduce violent crime. It is clearer than ever that we have a searing responsibility to do more to keep guns out of the wrong hands.”
The bills in question would expand and strengthen background checks as well as prevent individuals on the FBI's " no-fly" list from purchasing guns in America.
Ryan recessed the House session for the holiday break two days early in response to the protest which last over 24 hours. House Democrats pledged to continue their protest when the session reconvenes in July.
House Republicans have blocked a vote on the "No Fly, No Buy" legislation 13 times despite its bipartisan support.
