Todd Rokita. Indiana’s secretary of state is part of a national effort to reform the front-loaded presidential primary system to make Hoosiers — and every other U.S. voter — relevant in choosing presidential nominees.
Judge Sarah Evans Barker. Federal judge continues to put heat on Sheriff Frank Anderson and other city-county officials to solve the problems of the overcrowded and under-staffed Marion County Jail and Lockup.
President Bush. Poll numbers are good, but election year begins with people still dying by the score in Iraq post-Saddam’s capture. Now there are ominous rumblings about the investigation into the White House leak of the identity of a CIA agent.
The Indianapolis Star. The entire front page and almost all of the rest of the Jan. 3 “Indiana Living” section came from non-Hoosier sources. Knight Ridder features on Pennsylvania people are Hoosier enough for Gannett.
Mayor Bart Peterson. Begins second term with pledge: “I intend to lead, and lead boldly.” That would be a welcome change from Peterson I. Sewers, housing and transit issues will give mayor and Democrat-controlled council plenty of opportunities to fulfill his promise.
Sens. Joe Lieberman and John Kerry. Once-leading Demo presidential candidates react to sinking poll numbers by launching vicious attacks on Howard Dean. Desperate senators are demeaning themselves and hurting Demo presidential chances.
