Stupid Star. Despite noting in its editorial that President Bush “adamantly refuses to listen to those who question him” and has “proved to be a divider rather than a unifier,” The Indianapolis Star still endorsed Bush Sunday because “this is not a time to take a risk on untested and poorly defined leadership.” Bush has been tested and he failed us all.
Perfectly ironic. The Gary Varvel cartoon placed next to The Star’s endorsement editorial said plenty about what’s wrong with Bush. Varvel drew John Kerry pulling up in a Volkswagen Beetle (see Love Bug) next to Bush in a gas-guzzling Hummer. A blonde woman next to Bush leans out and says, “Sorry, John, I feel safer right here,” as the president grins.
Fallen tiger. We acknowledge the Oct. 18 passing of Lena, the Indianapolis Zoo’s beloved female Amur tiger. Rescued from her native Russia in 1992, Lena came to Indy in ’97 where she was the top ranked female Amur tiger in the Species Survival Plan (SSP). Of her seven cubs, two remain at the Indianapolis Zoo.
