The everyday and the extraordinary
I've enjoyed your articles in the past, but want to thank you, in particular, for the recent piece on Scott Russell Sanders (Cover, “I Astonish Easily,” July 5-12). The irony of the story, of course, is that even while he is celebrating the everyday and ordinary, he is himself an extraordinary teacher and human being. In 1988, I was in his class at IU, a school of what, 30,000-plus students a year? Six years ago, I moved back to Indiana and saw that he was doing a signing in Greenwood. I walked in the door and approached the table; Scott Sanders looked up and said, "Hi, Chris."
Reading your piece was like having a conversation with him, which, as I recall, was always enlightening. Thanks for your solid, human journalism and your eye for modest but bright excellence.
