"Armstrong and Discovery Channel Team at IMS

Lance Armstrong and the Discovery Channel Pro Cycling Team are coming to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Saturday, Aug. 12, bringing with them two incredible opportunities for cycling enthusiasts of all levels.

In the morning, there will be a 10-mile competitive Race2Replace around the Indianapolis Motor Speedway 2.5 mile track in which cyclists will compete to win a spot on the Discovery Pro Cycling team at this year’s pro championships. Many of the best riders from around the country are expected to take part in the challenge and the chance to win a spot on the professional cycling team.

There will be eight category winners (Men 18-24, Men 25-34, Men 35-49, Men 50 and older, Women 18-24, Women 25-34, Women 35-49 and Women 50 and older) based solely on best time for the 10 laps. The cyclist who achieves the fastest time overall will be named the Grand Prize winner. In the event of a tie for any prize, a tie-breaking race consisting of a one-lap sprint between the tied contestants will determine the winner. Any tie-breaking races will be held prior to the winner announcement event.

Winners in each of the eight brackets will take part in an awards ceremony with Lance Armstrong and the cyclist with the best overall time will earn a slot on the Discovery Channel Pro Cycling Team at the U.S. Pro Championships in Greenville, S.C., on Sept. 1, 2006. The Grand Prize winner will also receive an official Trek Bike and Discovery Channel Pro Cycling jersey. All racers will receive a limited edition shirt.

Those not quite up for the challenge of competing for a spot on the Discovery Channel team but who still want to come and experience the thrill of riding on the famous Indy speedway can sign up to do a lap around the IMS with seven-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong. The champion will be leading a lap around the track immediately following the Race2Replace competition. All riders 13 years and older are invited to participate.

There is no admission fee for the day-long event, which will also include vendors and musical entertainment, including a performance by Collective Soul. All proceeds from the cycling registration costs benefit the Lance Armstrong Foundation and the Indiana University Cancer Center.
