House Bill 1449 passed in committee yesterday. The bill would instruct the Indiana BMV to design and issue a new license plate inspired by the John Lennon song "Imagine."
According to the bill's author, Rep. Jeb Bardon (D-Indianapolis), $25 from the sale of each plate would then go to Feeding America, an organization that assists food banks located in Indiana.
"With unemployment growing at record rates, an increasing number of Hoosiers need help providing food for their families," said Bardon. "The sale of these plates would give Hoosiers a chance to help feed those suffering within our state."
Feeding America supports 206 food banks all over America, providing assistance to more than 25 million, including more than 9 million children, facing hunger in the United States.
Florida already distributes the "Imagine" specialty license plate, which has a hand-drawn self portrait of the late Beatles' member, John Lennon, before a background of clouds. This initiative has helped Florida raise over $786,000 to help put a stop to hunger within their state.
"This is a wonderful opportunity to help our food banks in Indiana meet growing demand," said Bardon.
The bill now goes to the full House for consideration.
