Thank you for a well-researched article regarding the CPMs and their struggle for licensure in the state of Indiana (Dispatch, “Desperate Midwives,” Jan. 25-Feb. 1). Although I have a nursing background and will be a CNM (certified nurse-midwife) in the next couple of months, I support HB 1237 because it gives women the right to select their provider for their pregnancy and birth experience.

Birth is a normal natural experience. Both certified nurse-midwives and certified professional midwives are educated to autonomously care for women who are low-risk. They are also educated in handling the unexpected and knowing when they are out of their professional boundaries to seek medical attention for the small minority of women who may need such attention.

I applaud your writing about the situation in Indiana. I appreciate that you have made your readers aware of the need to change our law by making CPMs legal, as they are in more than 30 states across our free nation.
