"Marion County Republicans had their own reaction to Mayor Peterson’s budget proposal. Immediately following Monday’s meeting, GOP Chairman Tom John released a press release condemning Peterson for “abusing his power and turning his budget presentation at Monday’s City-County Council meeting into a re-election campaign rally.”
“I am shocked and appalled at the mayor’s actions this evening,” John said. “The city was looking forward to hearing Bart Peterson engage the council in a serious discussion of how he will help Indianapolis emerge from its serious fiscal crisis. Instead, Bart Peterson abused his power at the expense of citizens to make his speech a campaign rally.”
In his press release, John claimed that several sections of public seating in the SerVaas Meeting Room were reserved for Peterson supporters and employees. He also stated that security escorted out at least 20 citizens to make room for Peterson supporters and employees in the meeting room.
“Dozens of citizens were denied admittance into the City-County Building and were forced to stand outside in over 90 degree weather because security said the meeting room was full,” John said. ”It is despicable that Peterson would go to such lengths to stifle the public to try to make himself look good.”
John also noted the lack of substance or budget details in his presentation.
“Bart Peterson used the pulpit tonight not to brief the council on a budget, but to campaign for his re-election. He owes taxpayers an apology for wasting their money to make himself look good when it is becoming increasingly clear his re-election numbers are faltering,” John concluded.
