"City-County Council President Monroe Gray responded to the mayor’s 2008 proposed city budget this week by asking for cooperation from the state Legislature and citizen input. With 70 percent of the property taxes in Marion County currently levied by government bodies beyond the control of the City Council, Gray believes the state bears the majority of responsibility for responding to the current property tax crisis.
“I’m sure my fellow councilors join me in urging the governor and the members of the General Assembly to reform property taxes. I sincerely hope that you will all join us at the Statehouse when we ask the Legislature to address this problem,” Gray said in a speech at Monday’s council meeting.
Gray also encouraged Marion County residents to attend upcoming meetings of the City Council budget committee as they shape the next year’s budget.
