My partner and I own a very sweet and gentle pit bull-type dog (she was a stray that we took in as a puppy, so we're not exactly sure what mix she is) (News, Thumbs, June 6-13). Because of all the negative media coverage of pit bulls and the bans that have been enacted in other cities, we are constantly fearful that a similar ban in Indiana will put the life of our dog in jeopardy. Mandating extermination of a breed of dog, the vast majority of who are gentle and well-mannered, is akin to mandating the imprisonment of an entire ethnic group of people because one person of that group committed a murder. It is ridiculous, unethical and will not work. Those people who will purposely raise dogs to be violent, or who will, through their neglect or abuse, cause a dog to become violent, will find other breeds to victimize.
