Nightlives Alex Alex, manager of Klub Kameleon, 120 E. Market St., spends his time running the show and keeping things together around the club, but it’s on Friday nights, Salsa Fridays, that he really comes into his own. Alex Alex among the crowd of Salsa Fridays, the night he hosts at Klub Kameleon. “It’s a club for all true salseros, people who are really into salsa,” Alex said. “You only get classic salsa, merengue, bachata and today’s salsa. No top 40, no Tex-Mex.” Alex hosts the night and shares spinning duties with DJ Juan. In addition to his Kameleon gig, he’s also a DJ for 106.7 WTLC Saturdays from 4 to 8 p.m. and Sundays from noon to 3 p.m., spinning R&B and classic soul tunes. As manager and creative director of the club, Alex said his goal is to live up to the club’s name. “The chameleon adapts to the environment around it, and that’s what we try to do,” Alex said. “Each night has its own following. So Thursday nights we have hip-hop with Hot 96, the first Friday of every month is a Spencer & Nate Production, and Saturday nights is more of a house, techno, top 40 night. My job here is making sure promoters’ needs are taken care of. We’re always open to good promoters.” And of course there’s his own love, Salsa Fridays, the second, third and fourth Fridays of every month. “We get a very diverse crowd of people, Hispanics, African-Americans, Asian,” Alex said. “It’s where the true salseros come together and find a common ground in their love of salsa. It’s really classy and elegant. That’s what we’re always trying to be here. Classy and elegant.” He credits the bar staff of Kameleon with much of the success of the club in the year it’s been open. “I have Jason and his flamethrowing and his years of experience, and Tanya is just a real charmer, a real people person,” Alex said. “They work very well together; I guess you could call it the yin and the yang. And we couldn’t do it without the one person who keeps it all together, Susie with the books, Susie from Sabor Latino.” He’s been a DJ for 12 years now, and said his style hasn’t changed much in the interim. “Look at the dance floor,” he said. “Follow the people on the dance floor. That’s what I do. It’s all about customer service.” Check out Alex Alex hosting Salsa Night every Friday but the first Friday of the month at Kameleon, 120 E.
