C-Rayz Walz, Kayo, Mic Sol, The Broadkastaz, Rhyme Rock
Therapy Nightclub & Lounge
Friday, April 20, 9 p.m., $10/$15
When Bronx-bred MC C-Rayz Walz steps onto the stage, you might think you have seen or heard him someplace before. He’s the battle-tested MC that taught some suburban white boy how to rap on MTV’s Made, but that’s just a small blip on his resume. He’s also been banned from MC battles for his inability to lose, released three albums on El-P’s top-notch Definitive Jux label, written two books and a screenplay and released his latest album, The Dropping, on his own label, Sun Cycle Records.
Joining Walz at this eclectic event are Indy-based MCs Kayo and Mic Sol, as well as Southern Indiana’s Rhyme Rock collective and the Broadkasterz. Add to that a diverse collection of DJs (B Wizzle, Gizzmo, Shiva, Dozuki and Merkaba) playing everything from underground hip-hop to the bass-laden U.K. export known as “dubstep,” to old-school funk and soul and some lounge-y exotica. Throw in a live graffiti expo and a B-Boy competition, some clothing and skateboard give-aways and you have got one hot party.
Indy may be known as Naptown for its invitation to snooze, but don’t sleep on this showcase of underground, forward-thinking, urban music and culture.
