Kelly McKay is an on-air personality at radio station Z-99.5.How has being an on-air personality affected your life outside of work?

I get paid to go out so when I’m off that’s the last thing I want to do.

What made you want to pursue radio?

A friend dared me when I was a freshman in college.

If not radio, what would your profession most likely be?

I’d be an unsuccessful stripper.

Would you say that radio is a gender-biased industry?

Radio is definitely a man’s world.

What is the most regular complaint you hear about radio?

Too much repetition!

Can radio serve a pure purpose if there is also a corporate agenda involved, which is not so pure?

We offer listeners a distraction from reality. They’re not affected by corporate B.S.

If given the opportunity, how would you change the station’s format?

Ease up on the repetition but otherwise I like the music we play.

Are there any specific records in rotation that you’re painfully sick of hearing?

I’d rather have my period than hear Maroon 5’s “Harder To Breath” one more time!

What were some of your favorite records released last year?

3 Doors Down Here Without You, Seven Nation Army by the White Stripes and, amazingly enough, anything by Justin Timberlake.

Would you say that radio is as supportive of the Indy music scene as it should be?

Our station supports local artists but most other commercial radio stations don’t.

Do you have any favorite local bands?

Barlights, and X Ray Roger Jimmy are great as well as Blueprintmusic.

What do you see as the perception of local music in Indy?

I don’t think the average person really cares, and that’s sad.

What do you think it would take to change that perception?

Offer some free shows as a means of getting people to experience live music.

What are the biggest misconceptions about the protocol of getting played on air?

Most listeners don’t understand how political radio is. DJs have no say in what’s played.

Do you have advice to bands looking to find their way onto the airwaves?

Unless you really love playing, get out of the business while you can!
