Let me apply the caveat right up front, applicable to each of these entries: Most of these places are great nightlife spots any day of the week. Just because I recommend Triology+1 Wednesdays at the Jazz Kitchen doesn’t mean that you should skip out on the Buselli-Wallarab Jazz Orchestra on Tuesdays.

Ground Control at Spin Nightclub: Admittedly, I’m recommending this one sight unseen, since as of this writing, it’s still a few weeks from starting. But Spin’s a great place for nightlife action any night of the week, and a weekly event promoted by DJ TopSpeed is definitely worth checking out.

OK, so Tuesdays are pretty much the deadest night of the week around town these days. Quite often, though, you can catch an interesting national act at the Vogue.

Jazz Kitchen: Possibly more than any other, this is a sure bet for any night, but I’ve long had a soft spot for the work of saxophonist Rob Dixon and his Triology+1 performances.

Club Level: The goth-industrial scene has moved around a good bit in the last two decades, but it’s found a stable home for some time now at Club Level (and previous incarnations), with the “Freak Show” dance nights on the second and fourth Thursday of every month. Wicked Wednesdays (fetish nights) occur at the same site on the first Wednesday of each month.

Radio Radio: Sure, the whole city’s hopping this night, but you can do a whole lot worse than catching whomever might be playing at Radio Radio on a Friday night. The first Friday of every month is always devoted to the longtime rockabilly maestros Bigger Than Elvis.

Anybody who knows anything can finish Indy’s iconic sentence almost before it starts: “Every Saturday night is Punk Rock Night at the Melody Inn.” And for my money, the historic Melody Inn is far and away the best choice for a local hangout spot, period.

Talbott Street: Actually, just about any night is a good night to drop by Talbott Street, but on the relatively quiet Sunday evening scene, the Ladies of Legend and the remarkable DJs spinning there are the perfect way to close out the week and get ready to plunge into Monday.
