Hum.V CD release party

The Vogue

Thursday, June 21

If his CD release party at the Vogue last week is any indication, Hum.V is one of those guys who comes off pretty good in the studio and damn great on stage. He’s a man of the people — a hip-hop populist — who thrives on a connection and bond with the audience.

Plus he’s a hell of a showman. Hum.V is from that same school as Kid Rock or House of Pain or even Living Colour, who bring together disparate elements that shouldn’t work on paper but tear the roof off, nonetheless, and are driven by sheer sincerity. Hyperkinetic, racing and jumping like a madman — that’s the Hum.V way.

Thursday night, it all hung together musically. He performed with an array of guest vocalists and a full backing band in addition to the DJ, and the rich, thick layering of the band really brought an immediacy and power to the songs that wouldn’t quite be there otherwise.

For no particular reason, a firedancer came out to start flinging flames during his blowout encore rendition of Rage Against the Machine’s “Bulls on Parade.” Certainly, there’s no doubt that fire makes everything better.
