Now that summer is officially on, the jazz scene will be explosive this week with the Fourth of July holiday weekend.
The Finnell Factor will celebrate with hot jazz at Riverside Park Sunday, July 4 in a free concert at 5 p.m.
The Indianapolis Jazz Orchestra will play a patriotic big band show Thursday, July 1 at the Community Life Center at Washington Park East at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the event, students $10 in advance.
Easley Winery’s Wine Garden Jazz will heat up the holiday weekend with Dan Coy and Quatro Locos playing Saturday, July 3 from 2-5 p.m. Admission is free.
Rick’s Cafe Boatyard will have the CJ Trio playing for July 4’s Sunday Jazz Brunch from 12:30-5:30 p.m. and The Art Trio continues the holiday musical fireworks from 7:30-11:30 p.m.
Jazz On the Avenue, in the Madame Walker Theatre Center, brings back saxophonist Jason Curry’s Quartet. They will light things up Friday, July 2 from 6-10 p.m. Vocal instrumental group the
Four Sexes bring colorful and warm jazz and pop to the Porch in the Hyatt Regency’s Sunday Brunch July 4 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.
The recently opened Smokehouse Cafe on the Southside, at Meridian and County Line Road, will feature tasty jazz by The Impulse Trio for its patriotic holiday Sunday Jazz Brunch going from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.
Keystone Grill’s Sunday Jazz Brunch features the Steve Corn/Fred Withrow piano and bass duo playing hot jazz for July 4 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. The smooth jazz flame of Lisa Baldwin’s vocals and keyboards continues the holiday mood as she plays 6-8 p.m.
Indy lost one of its most swinging drummers recently with the passing of Jozelle Carter. I have spent many gigs listening and watching and feeling Carter’s stylistic swing and drive that propelled and ignited the musical journeys of those he played with. How he could groove and swing — especially in an organ setting, where the sound seemed to move him to a higher level of playing. His drum sticks will be hard to replicate and greatly missed.
