More than a year ago, Alex Edgecombe told me about his project Bangs Nicely, "It's dear to me. It's a lot of love. ... [If I had it my way] I would be in small, 100-person venues playing stuff that people actually have an emotional attachment to moreso than an elevated heart rate and a sweaty glass in their hand." On January 19, Edgecombe previewed the first album from that project — titled The Let Go, slated for a spring release — at a small, 100-person venue with people who actually had an emotional attachment to it. Such an attachment that some members in attendance had heard these songs in 15 different versions before Edgecombe finalized them.
Growing out of the dissolution of a significant relationship, club DJ Edgecombe (who performs most often as Cool Hand Lex) started writing his own stuff under the name Bangs Nicely. This album, The Let Go, is the result of four years of writing and learning. And Edgecombe has imbued every bit with personal meaning and significance.
"Because it took me four years to write this music, every piece of it means something," Edgecombe said during his introduction at the listening party. "It won't directly be interpreted to you as though it meant something to me, but when you hear a bird, it's not just a bird. It's a cardinal. And I picked a cardinal specifically because of a lot of things. The song that it is in represents when I was at Ball State — Ball State Cardinals. Things like that. When I'm painting sounds back and forth, there's a reason I did that, and it's not just to give you sonic separations. I'm trying to say something."
He'll play that album out in public tonight at IndyMojo's Altered Thurzdaze event at the Mousetrap with support from Num3r1k, Ceebz and Mike B.
Although Edgecombe specializes in getting rooms moving, GPC was incredibly still that night at the listening party — save for heads bobbing. The Let Go is an engrossing listen from front to back. Yes, it will be great to dance to tonight at the Trap, but it's also a solid chill listen, and obviously a piece of work that's been labored over. It will receive an official release some time this spring.
We've got "The Sun Goes Down" below. Head over to IndyMojo for another track, "Sluggin.' "
