Party Tour It all started with a man, a brown custom van and a dream. Now, a year later, Hup’s Hoopty — a chauffeured bar-crawl service for the beer-party set — is hitting it big with an artsy musical tour of the city’s six Cultural Districts.
Ryan Hupfer, 25, who runs the side business and its corresponding website, hupshoopty.com, hopes Saturday’s Discover the Districts Tour will prove entertaining and enlightening for the 200-plus partiers bused around town that night. “As a 20-something living in Indianapolis, I felt like there are a lot of great things going on around the city that people should know about,” he says. “And this tour is my way to do it. There’s no better way to create awareness of the Districts and of local music than throwing people on buses and taking them to the performances.”
Even officials from the Indianapolis Cultural Development Commission liked Hupfer’s idea enough to join a big list of sponsors supporting the event.
To enjoy the full experience, partiers need to buy a $25 ticket on Hupshoopty.com. That ticket includes a seat on the bus, admission to all venues, a free T-shirt and an invite to the VIP party at the end of the night. But all shows along the tour are open to the general public free of charge.
Here’s the schedule: Sign in at 5 p.m. at Tiki Bob’s in the Wholesale District downtown; buses leave at 6 p.m.; Re Vera at the Alley Cat Lounge in Broad Ripple at 6:45 p.m.; Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn Band on the Canal off of Vermont Street at 8 p.m.; The Flat 5 at Bourbon Street Distillery along Indiana Avenue at 9 p.m.; Pale and an interactive art experience at the Murphy Art Center in Fountain Square at 10 p.m.; improvisational acting at Theatre on the Square on Mass Ave. at 11 p.m.; Mardelay plays after a short film about the band at Hollywood Bar and Filmworks Downtown at 12:30 a.m.; and it all ends with a VIP party at Have a Nice Day Café at 1 a.m.
