Hosted at the Mousetrap just outside of Broad Ripple, Altered Thurzdaze is a weekly event produced by IndyMojo that's been going on for 12 years. It features EDM or dubstep music in the Mousetrap's bar/dining room. The legendary yet intimate venue is the perfect place to experience the EDM scene of Indy.
On Thursday nights, a crowd of hippies, wooks, and other EDM enthusiasts gather for some good music, drinks, and fried pickles. Going from the brisk, fresh air outside to the thick and damp atmosphere of the bar can feel like stepping into another world. The dull thudding that can be heard before entering cannot quite prepare you for the blast of bass that hits you. The first step, get to the bar. Wade through the gyrating bodies to choose the shortest of the handful of lines at the bar, and within a few minutes, the drink is secured. As a woman alone at a bar, I drink my drink and toss out the cup before walking away, but there are two patios with seating outside if that's what you'd prefer. It was vodka and Redbull, in case you were wondering. The second step, prepare yourself. It's loud, it's hot, and it's crowded, but you fucking got this. The third step, have some fun.
Time can melt away in there. The bass goes from the floor into my feet and shakes my bones. This is one of the few places where I don't feel bad about the fact that I simply cannot dance. In the middle of a sea of people, hands up, brain off… one minute it's 10:30, and the next it's 11:50. I step outside and take the first breath of non-recycled air I've had in over an hour. Only a few minutes until the main event, SubDocta, and the last call for food orders. DJs that perform for Altered Thurzdaze range from local "up-and-coming" artists to nationally acclaimed artists with millions of streams. SubDocta is one of those bigger artists with hits such as "West Coast Wobble" and "Bussin Bussin." Grab another drink, down it, and toss it. I joined the crowd and wiggled my way as close to the stage as possible, and got ready to be a spastic mess for the next hour.
It was a good hour; I just wish it hadn't felt so short. SubDocta put together a spectacular set, which made my top ten EDM shows. After SubDocta's set, I head outside to wait on my ride. At 1:30 a.m., I'm finally ready to go home and settle down, still replaying some of my favorite beats in my head (or on my phone). So many aspects of an Altered Thurzdaze night make you want to return; the music, the drinks, the food, and the people. The Mousetrap has something going on every day, from Altered Thurzdaze to trivia on Mondays to family jam on Sundays. Located at 5565 N Keystone Ave.
