APA Jazz Fellowship Awards
The American Pianists Association’s Seventh Triennial Cole Porter Jazz Fellowship, held in Indianapolis, is underway. The five young pianists vying for the fellowship, worth about $75,000, are Victor Gould, 18, student at the Berklee School of Music in Boston, but originally from Los Angeles, Calif.; Jacob Koller, 26, graduate of Arizona State University, from Phoenix, Ariz.; Jeremy Siskind, 20, Eastman School of Music, from Irvine, Calif.; Dan Tepfer, 25, graduate of University of Edinburgh, the Paris Conservatory and the New England Conservatory, from Paris, France; Glenn Zaleski, 19, University of the Pacific Brubeck Institute, from Boylston, Mass.
On Wednesday, April 25, the finalists will receive a mayor’s welcome in the lobby of the Omni Severin Hotel at 5 p.m., which is open to the public. They will also perform a pre-competition “Concert Curriculum” community outreach program Thursday, April 26 at the Fay Billard Glick Neighborhood Center at Crooked Creek at 10:30 a.m. and the Martin Luther King Center at 4:30 p.m.
The competition’s judges are renowned award-winning jazz pianists Lynne Arriale, Fred Hersch, Renee Rosnes and Denny Zeitlin, as well as Joel Chriss, president and founder of Chriss & Co., a New York-based worldwide booking company for jazz artists and events.
The semifinals on Friday, April 27 will take place at the Jazz Kitchen, beginning at 6:45 p.m. Each set costs $30 for attendees. On Saturday, April 28, the competition finals and “Afterglow Party” will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Madame Walker Theatre. Finals cost $25 for adults and $5 for students (K-college). The Buselli Wallarab Jazz Orchestra will back up the finalists’ performances with special arrangements.
• The Indianapolis Jazz Club presents Banu Gibson and her Buddies at the Wood Room, Park Tudor School, Saturday, April 28 from 7 to 10 p.m. Banu, a noted singer, guitarist and tap dancer, is a Hurricane Katrina survivor who was literally washed out of her home. Admission is $20 at the door, students with ID cost $5.
• This week’s free Jazz Appreciation Month concerts at the Artsgarden will feature Bam Miller & Jazz Blues & Other Hues Wednesday, April 25 at 12:15 p.m.; Thursday, the Indiana Avenue Jazz All Stars perform at 12:15 p.m.; Sunday, the Monika Herzig Acoustic Project performs at 2 p.m.
