“Really, the idea is to put a call out to any and all of the Indy jazz musicians [and tell them] we are going to get together one day and do a big photograph of every musician,” Sheldon says.

This event is in its early stages, but Sheldon is looking at April 2008 for the photo shoot, which coincides with national Jazz Appreciation Month. He plans to make a poster of the photo and give one to each musician, selling the rest to the public, with proceeds going to a musical charity in Indianapolis.

Sheldon is still working on a day and location. “Art Kane did his photo on a Sunday,” he says. “I know a lot of our jazz musicians are teachers as well. Trying to have it on a morning of a weekday would be difficult, so you are looking at a weekend day. I really don’t have a location figured out yet and exact date or time, but I am looking at sometime in late April when the weather breaks a little bit.”

Sheldon knows he faces some challenges in this project. “You don’t know if 20 people or 200 will show up when you tell every jazz musician in the city [to show up], whether they are teachers or students who play around town, plus regular working musicians. There are a lot of these musicians I don’t know who probably haven’t played in years but still should be a part of it,” he says.
