Jazz Works’ free workshop
Jazz Works Pass It On! will hold a free workshop Saturday, Feb. 3 from 2 to 3:30 p.m., featuring the “Godfathers of Groove” Reuben Wilson, B-3 organ; Grant Green Jr., guitar; and legendary drummer Bernard “Pretty” Purdie. All three artists are masters of the blues, soul, funk and groove jazz. Purdie alone has laid his beat on over 3,000 albums.
Teachers and music students can bring their instruments, and listeners are invited to the free session at the Gene B. Glick Education Center at Junior Achievement of Central Indiana, 7435 N. Keystone Ave. Shirley Judkins and Monika Herzig will host the free workshop.
Jazz this week
The Jazz Kitchen has top-flight local talent performing this weekend. On Friday, Feb. 2, Grammy Award-winning jazz balladeer Everett Greene & Friends performs at 8:30 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 3, composer, pianist and vocalist Jeff DeHerdt releases his second CD, The Autumn House, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Afterwards, take a sensational peek at an upcoming CD as Indy jazz legend and B-3 organ master Melvin Rhyne teams up with saxophonist Rob Dixon and drummer Kenny Phelps at 8:30 and 10:30 p.m., $10 cover.
The Arts Council of Indianapolis presents Art & Soul, a free month-long celebration of Black History Month, at the Artsgarden. The 2007 theme, “Voices, Vibes and Views,” features African-American performances of dance, blues, poetry, gospel, jazz, pop and storytelling. On Thursday, Feb. 1, Jimmy Guilford and G-Force, Indy’s iconic entertainer, will open the free 17 days of performances. Vickie Daniels recites poetry and sings with support by the Carl Hines Trio on Tuesday, Feb. 6. Both performances are at 12:15 p.m.
The Indy Jazz Men debut at A. Jay’s on North Street at Senate Avenue Saturday, Feb. 3. The lineup includes Carl Hines, piano; Al Finnell, bass; Vincent Finnell, drums; Bill Pennick, tenor sax; and Steve Weakly, guitar. Guest vocalist for the event will be Mary Moss. Music runs 10 p.m. until 1 a.m. with no cover charge. The Indy Jazz Men are preparing their first CD for release later this year.
