With the new year comes a new look to this column. For Jazz Happenings, you will find a seven-day report of local venues for jazz in the Soundcheck section. Special jazz events, reviews and artist interviews will remain regular items in this column.
The Indiana State Museum will present “Jazz in Indiana” Jan. 21 from 2-3 p.m., featuring Amy Locklin, vocals; Michael Eaton, tenor sax; Steven Jones, piano; and Dave Bruker, bass. The performance is free with a paid museum fee.
The “man with a horn,” saxophonist Tommy Wills, plays the opening of the new Gia Bella Italian Ristorante at Hanna and South Meridian streets from 6-9 p.m. Jan. 18.

Keyboardist/vocalist Dave Ellman substitutes for vacationing Dave Lowe Jan. 17 at Murphy’s Restaurant, 4189 N. Keystone Ave. His performance runs 7-10 p.m. Ellman’s regular gig is at Sangiovese Ristorante, 4110 E. 82nd St., Saturdays from 7:30-10:30 p.m.
