Chad Vangaalen, "Soft Airplanes"

Despite the few aggravating hipster-ready novelty tunes on Chad Vangaalen’s third proper album, the budding Canadian songwriter has managed to put together one of the fall season’s goofiest and most exciting listens. Standing artistically strong behind a voice that surely never won a schoolyard scrap, Vangaalen is the latest weirdo popster in a long tradition of lo-fi bedroom kings. Best described as a quirky pop record that often bridges the gap between Lou Barlow’s two ’90s monikers, Sebadoh and Folk Implosion. Weirder, though.
