July is high season for the much-beloved farmers’ market. The availability of produce is at its highest peak at this time of year. Examples of available items are:

Locally Grown Gardens, a year round farm market located at 54th street and the Monon, is one such market with an abundance of produce. I spoke with owner Ron Harris about taking advantage of the items available at this time of year." Just as much fresh fruit as you can have. It’s always easy finger food, so it’s nice to remember to bring them on the road with you when you’re going someplace.” suggested Ron Harris.

LGG is not just a produce stand. With his expertise, Harris also uses his fresh ingredients to prepare dishes for customers every day. Some items, like sugar cream pie and hog roast, are staples in the shop that are always available. Other items—like the salad—are usually available, but with different ingredients based on the season.

Harris takes advantage of the cooking capabilities summer offers to mix up his menu. Summer is the perfect time to pull out the grill and prepare simpler, lighter meals. Harris’ advice is to use, “A little olive oil, cracked pepper, a nice salt and just let the flavors speak for themselves." Olive oil is great for grilling, as its viscosity and light flavor do not overpower the natural flavors of the food.

Inspired by my conversation with Harris, I decided to draw up my own ideal summer meal. In shop, Harris suggested a salad with baby greens, peaches and a simple balsamic vinaigrette. I would pair this light, fresh side with grilled chicken kabobs. This dish offers a fair amount of flexibility, in that you can use just about any vegetable you wish. Personally, I would choose red and green bell peppers and Vidalia onion for a little sweetness and crunch. To round out this delectable summer meal, I would choose nothing other than peach pie. Admittedly, I would probably go back to LGG to get a slice—or an entire pie—rather than make my own. We’ve raved about Harris’ pies in the past.
