The Indiana State Fair Train has been running for 33 years. And for every single one of those years I I considered taking the train to the Fair, but I couldn't bring myself to drive to Fishers only to wind up within walking distance of my house.
My clever brothe, J.R., pointed out that I could ride the Fair Train round trip from the Fairgrounds and back. I honestly hadn't thought of that.
I took the round trip on Sunday and it was delightful. The Indiana Transportation Museum runs the trains as a fundraiser for their restoration projects. The passenger coaches were built in 1937 by the Bud Corporation and the engines are all 1950’s vintage.
Indiana Transportation Museum volunteer Brian Henke entertained the us with a train song.
I loved the 90 minute round trip to Fishers and back. Ironically J.R. and his family, who live in Fishers, were at the State Fair while I was on the train and I missed them.
In keeping with the train theme, i toured the Indiana Bicentennial Train (parked at the Fairgrounds near Pioneer Village). The exhibit is stuffed with Indiana history in celebration of Indiana's 200th birthday next year.
#selfiewtihafarmer - Miss Boone County, Shelby Lamb, and her family raise corn, popcorn, corn seed, wheat and soy beans (and some lambs, of course) and have an organic ag recycling operation.
One thing I love about the State Fair is that you can always find a connection with someone. In Shelby's case thepath was a short one. Her dad, Don, and my little sister were in the same class and we all rode the same bus. And I was a contestant in the Miss Boone County in 1979 - a very shy and nervous contestant at that.
I went to see the Hoedown Express Cloggers (also from Boone County) and we delighted to see them dance to Reverend Peyton's Big Damn Band's "Clap Your Hands."
Nora Spitznogle is a nonprofit director by day and year-round Indiana State Fair geek. She hasn't missed a single day of the Fair in over a decade and the stack of ribbons from entering baking competitions and ugly lamp contests in the Open Show are among her prized possessions.
