Community Bites

The day before the Super Bowl, Indianapolis chefs will suit up for a different kind of bowl: the Second Annual Souper Bowl Saturday at the Indianapolis City Market. Fans of the ultimate comfort food - soup - are invited to attend Souper Bowl Saturday, Feb. 4, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., at Indianapolis City Market downtown. Admission is free and soup samples are only $1 each. Fans can sample entries in four soup categories: clear soup/consommés, thick soups/purees, bisques/chowders and specialty soups/others. In addition, fans will have an opportunity to judge soups for awards alongside industry professionals from the American Culinary Federation. Participants include chefs from Barking Dog Café, Binkley's, Boulevard Place Café, City Café, Decadent by Design, Dunaway's, Meridian Hills Country Club, Mills Catering, Santorini Greek Kitchen, Skyline Club and more. All proceeds from the event will benefit Second Helpings to support its food rescue, job training and hunger relief programs, as well as Indianapolis City Market to support its efforts in promoting Indiana food products and training food business entrepreneurs and workers.

Restaurant Notes

In Memoriam: Christopher M. Selby

Sept. 29, 1972-Dec. 17, 2005

It is with deep sorrow that the kitchen staff of R bistro announces the passing of Chris Selby, age 33, a prep cook at the restaurant since August 2004. Chris was an accomplished master sushi chef, possessing superior knife skills that aided in the butchering of whole fish. He brought a different perspective to the classic French preparations with his almost 15 years of Japanese sushi experience. Prior to his tenure at R bistro, Chris spent 10 years working at the Sushi Den in Denver, Colo., with Master Chef Toshi. Chris had a very forward and direct style in performing his work assignments and a reverence for his Japanese knives. He was an avid reader, enjoyed South Park and was a Denver Broncos fan. He is survived by his father, Michael Selby, who is employed at Edward E. Petri Co. in Indianapolis. His remaining family is in Colorado. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 17, 2006, at 3 p.m. at the Christ Church Cathedral on Monument Circle in Indianapolis.
