Getting into the holiday mood during Winterlights at NewFields

NUVO recently was invited to attend the preview of the third annual Winterlights at Newfields, a spectacular display of 1.5 million lights that runs through Jan. 5, 2020. As we arrived, we immediately checked in and received a couple of VIP passes (bonus!) The passes came with a couple of free drink tickets that were not going to waste.

We began our walkthrough of the museum, which was filled with sounds of the holidays — making things a bit merry. Next, we wandered through a gift shop where you could get a headstart on your gift list by picking up ornaments, snow globes, candles and a bunch of other stuff.

And then we walked outdoors to a pretty spectacular light show — a massive display of how much work was put into making this one of Indianapolis’ best holiday activities.

You begin your journey crossing the Snowflake Bridge with charming sounds playing as you walk past the trees. We stopped to talk to a couple of the volunteers who help guide people along with their experience and asked how many lights were on each tree.

The volunteer happily answered, "Each tree has about 50,000 lights, which takes about a week to wrap up. The large tree at the end contains 60,000 lights." As you walk past the trees with that in mind, you gain an appreciation of what the museum has created.

Guests also can wander through the Lilly House, where each room is decorated with elegant holiday displays. In the kitchen, fabricated cakes line the countertops, drawing you in to reach out and take a bite.

Take the family and stop by the Girl Scouts tent on the grounds selling smores for pit fires to roast and enjoy. Don't forget the hand warmers along the trail as you sip on your apple cider or hot chocolate (spiked options for adults).
