Five Indiana craft breweries took home honors in the 2019 Army Beer Competition. In a field of 144 participating breweries nationwide, The Tap was named #2 overall winner with 21.03 points; Bier placed fifth with 19.03 points.
Bend, OR-based Ten Barrel Brewing Co. West Side Pub took Grand Champion with 23.02 points. Scoring is based on five points for first place beers, three points for second place, and one point for third place.
Locally, The Tap earned top honors for: ‘Social’ American Lager, ‘Snow Drift’ English Strong Ale, and ‘Old Wooden Head’ English Barleywine; and a Second place for ‘Frostbite’ Belgian Dark Strong Ale.
Bier earned firsts for: ‘Sanitarium’ Belgian Dark Strong Ale, ‘Backpackin Brown Ale’ London Brown Ale, and ‘Pumpkin Ale’ Autumn Seasonal Beer; Second for ‘Marzen,’ and third for ‘John’s Porter’ English Porter.
Flix-Carmel won firsts for ‘Albus Percival Wulfric Bria Dunkeldore’ Munich Dunkle, and ‘Saison De Walt’ Brett Beer; second for ‘Tripel Carmel-ite’ Belgian Tripel; third for ‘Glass Half Full’ Blonde Ale. [Flix locations in Albuquerque, Madison, Wis., and Des Moines also had multiple wins. Carmel-based Chris Knott is the brewmaster overseeing all Flix operations.]
Four Day Ray won first for ‘Lantern Light’ German Exportbier; second for 'Warring Factions’ English Brown Ale.
Backstep Brewing earned first for ‘Black Hat’ Oatmeal Stout; and thirds for ‘9 Daughters’ Berliner Weisse, and ‘Frisch Alt’ Altbier.
Judging in 40 beer and six cider categories took place Jan. 19 and 20 at NoDA Brewing Company in Charlotte, NC. The awards ceremony was on Jan. 26 in Greenville, NC. All proceeds from the competition fund scholarships for degree-seeking students, according to the website announcing the winners.
