"Indianapolis native son and violinist William Harvey will present a concert in support of Music for the People, a program he has created that promotes international understanding by sending young American classical musicians around the world as cultural diplomats. Each project features several critical components, including recitals, outreach concerts, collaborations with local musicians and humanitarian organizations, as well as interaction with the local culture by staying with host families and learning the language.
“Sound of Water, Sound of Hope,” MFTP’s most recent project, sent flutist Sarah Frisof, cellist Ryan Murphy and Harvey to Zimbabwe to present music composition workshops for AIDS orphans.
May 20 at 3 p.m., Harvey will perform at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Indianapolis, 615 W. 43rd St. (just south of Butler University). The program will include a sneak-preview performance of the Violin Concerto by Edward Elgar, which Harvey will perform with the Manilla Symphony in June, plus selections from Porgy and Bess. Harvey will play with pianist Sylvia Patterson-Scott. The concert is free, with donations accepted. A reception will follow.
