Iconic images from centuries past and contemporary action painting meet in Walter Knabe's new work. In the triptych canvas "Sending Faith" you see a mixture of screen printing, stenciling, splatters of paint, and the kind of printed label you might see on a shipping container. The label reads "Dimensions: Faith." You might wonder if the screen print of a half nude female statue, the pastoral background, and the paint splatters in this painting add up to any kind of approximation of faith. Faith isn't a quantifiable thing that you can send through the mail, of course, and that's probably the point. Prints of Queen Isabella and of Buddhist statuary make appearances in a number of other canvases on display here and the irreverent paint splashes that Knabe subjects them to creates strange and sometimes humorous juxtapositions. Currently based in Indianapolis, Knabe has exhibited his fine art and functional artwork widely throughout the country. Through Nov. 30; 317-844-8400, www.evanluriegallery.com.
