Theater Rita Kohn Dirty_little_Heart plays out its layered human stories at Murphy Art Center, 1043 Virginia Ave., May 4 and 6 at 8 p.m. and May 5 at 10 p.m. (following First Friday galleries’ open house). Based on poems by Jim Walker, the site-specific performance is directed by Melli Hoppe and Nikki Cormaci, and features Butler University Theatre students as performers, designers and technical personnel. In collaboration with Beckmann Theatre 2nd Stage and Big Car gallery, dirty_little_Heart opens an on-going series of cutting-edge multi-arts performance pieces presented in collaboration with multiple arts and cultural organizations throughout Indianapolis. At its center, dirty_little_Heart is a dramatic poem that skirts reality and plumbs fantasy, taking us into the chambers of the human heart beyond its biological functions. The heart becomes an organ with a life granted to it by the protagonists who wander Brechtian-like through the Murphy Building and through fractured emotional states as fraught with danger as are uncharted geographic entities. Characters represent people who may have inhabited or passed through the building in its original state as a movie theater. Melli Hoppe’s site-specific performances combine spoken word with movement, sound, costumes and décor beyond traditional expectations of sitting in seats. Wear walking shoes and be prepared to stand. Butler Theatre alum Nikki Cormaci is making her directorial debut with this work. Enter through the back door from the parking lot off Woodlawn. Tickets are $10; $5 students; reserve in advance by e-mailing firstname.lastname@example.org or call 317-940-9659. More information at www.bigcar.org.
