"The theater season kicks on with Theatre on the Square’s first show of 2006-2007 — and it’s a mouthful: The Great American Trailer Park Musical. It is set in Armadillo Acres Trailer Park, the most “elite” trailer park in Stark, Fla. We meet trailer-dwellers Jeannie, who hasn’t left her trailer since her baby was kidnapped almost 20 years ago; her husband Norbert; and Betty, Lin and Pickles, a sort of Greek chorus set of fellow trailer residents. When Pippi, an ex stripper fleeing from her boyfriend Duke, moves into Armadillo Acres, the music and hilarity begin.
While “trailer trash” is the focus of the show, creators David Nehls and Betsy Kelso stress that they aren’t “making fun.” “People come in with a concept of what a trailer park is, what trailer trash is. We don’t go there. We come from a very real place. We treat these characters with great respect and affection,” Kelso told Talkin’ Broadway (www.talkinbroadway.com).
The off-Broadway country-rock and blues musical plays at TOTS, 627 Massachusetts Ave., Aug. 18-Sept. 23, Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 5 p.m. Tickets are $25, students and seniors (55-plus) $15. Call 317-685-TOTS for reservations.
