"Four and a half stars
Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra; Conner Prairie; July 27-28
Magnificent in every way. Violinist Nicola Benedetti nailed three very different works representing consecutive eras of symphonic music. Her reading of Massent’s “Meditation” from Thais took your breath away. It was as if even the wind stopped in awe, and the clouds hovered to hear the strength in softness, the heart in honesty. That’s on top of an awesome rendition of Mendelssohn’s Movement III from Violin Concerto in E minor, Op. 67 and a playful conversation for Bruch’s Movement III from Concerto No. 1 in G Minor for Violin and Orchestra, OP. 26. In each the collaboration with orchestra was embracing. Guest conductor Christian Knapp created a fine survey of symphonic music, delineating 20 of the 40. ISO players zipped right along, delivering everything from Baroque to modern with exacting nuances.
