"The Phoenix Theatre is known for being one of the first to nab Broadway and Off-Broadway shows, but this year, they are producing a 2007 Tony nominee: The Little Dog Laughed was nominee for a Best Play Tony Award, and its Broadway lead actress, Julie White, won for Best Actress. The Phoenix will produce the first post-Broadway production of Douglas Carter Beane’s hit comedy on its Mainstage June 14-July 22.
With a plot that sounds a lot like Straight Jacket, which was produced by Theatre on the Square last November, The Little Dog Laughed follows the adventures of Mitchell Green, a movie star who could hit it big if it weren’t for one small problem: He’s trying to make it as a heterosexual “matinee idol” but he’s gay. Trying to help him navigate Hollywood’s choppy waters is his devilish agent Diane, who’s doing all she can to keep him away from the cute rent boy who’s caught his eye and from the rent boy’s … girlfriend.
Shows are Thursdays at 7 p.m., Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. Tickets are $25, or $15 for those 24 and under. During CheapSeats week, June 14-17, all tickets are just $15. For reservations, call the Phoenix, 749 N. Park Ave., at 317-635-PLAY or go to www.phoenixtheatre.org.
