"Two and a half stars (PG-13)
Hugh Jackman, Christian Bale, Michael Caine, Piper Perabo
Christopher Nolan (Memento, Batman Beyond) offers another brooding tale, this one about a feud between magicians Hugh Jackman and Christian Bale set in Britain in the early 1900s. The rich atmosphere, intriguing behind-the-illusions glimpses and intense performances of the leads carry the film for a while, with their angry, obsessive behavior masking the lack of any other character development. Dandy performances from Michael Caine, Andy Serkis and David Bowie are a plus, but not quite enough to make up for the confusing ending that incorporates a deus ex machina straight out of Star Trek. 131 minutes. DVD INFO: Includes a few featurettes and an art gallery.
